Welcome to our CLEAR™ indoor modem set-up and installation tips section (please scroll down for CLEAR™ USB modem information)
We wish to thank you for the opportunity of working with you on the acquisition of your CLEAR™ 4G WiMAX high-speed wireless internet service through Tech In The City.

Take the CLEAR™ modem, power supply and Ethernet cable out of the box.
Swing open the stand located at the bottom of the CLEAR™ modem by turning it.
It is best to locate the CLEAR™ modem near and/or point the edge or spine of the CLEAR™ modem (the edge that has the Motorola logo on it) towards a window to get the best signal.
Plug the power supply into the CLEAR™ modem and then into the wall socket.
Upon power-up the CLEAR™ modem will immediately go through its' "wake up" sequence. The five green LED lights located on the top of the modem will start flashing. After a few minutes you will see the the lights will flash in sequence it has completed its' "wake up" sequence and is now searching for signal. The modem may repeat this process a few times as it analyzes the signal it receives from all of the towers that are within range. The lights will begin to flash at the same time once it has located a signal to lock on to.
Slooowly rotate the CLEAR™ modem about 1/8 turn every 15~20 seconds to find the maximum number of lights.
Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the CLEAR™ modem. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer or router (see your router instructions for directions specific to your router).
Turn on the power to your computer or router. The lights on your CLEAR™ modem will stop flashing once it has establishesed a connection to your computer or router. Remember, it is not necessary to have all five lights lit up to achieve maximum performance levels and speed. The modem can operate at its' maximum rated speed on as little as two lights. The more lights that remain lit, the stronger the connection.
Now open your internet browser.
PLEASE NOTE - If this is the first time that the modem has been connected to the internet you will be shown a CLEAR™ splash screen. Click on the CONTINUE button. Create the Password for your CLEAR™ accouont. Select a Security Question and provide an answer to the selected question. Read and agree to the "Terms of Service".

a guide to optimizing your CLEAR™ high-speed internet signal
location, location, location
To help determine which room has the strongest signal strength, move the modem from room to room. The modem takes 15~20 seconds to register a signal. So after you move the modem, pause for 15~20 seconds to get an accurate indication of the modem's signal strength. The signal strength is typically better on higher floors.
If the highest signal strength is in a room that is not a desirable location for the CLEAR™ modem use a pair of ClearPlug™ Ethernet Wall Mount Module units or place the modem in another room and face the modem towards the room with the better reception.
The ClearPlug™ Ethernet Wall Mount Module makes it possible to set up your CLEAR™ modem anywhere, wherever the wireless signal is strongest. ClearPlugs use existing electrical wiring to connect the modem and your computer, so you don't have to run unsightly ethernet cables through your home or office.To setup, simply:
A - Position the CLEAR™ modem where the signal is best and connect it to one of the ClearPlug™ units using an Ethernet cable. Then plug the ClearPlug™ unit directly into a wall outlet.
B - In your computer room, plug the other ClearPlug™ unit into a wall outlet and then use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer or wireless router to that ClearPlug™ unit.

ideal placement
The ideal placement for the CLEAR™ modem is near a window oriented towards a CLEAR™ tower site. The modem's antenna is located on the edge or spine of the CLEAR™ modem where the Motorola logo is, opposite where the cables are plugged into the modem. Call CLEAR™ Trechnical Support at 1-888-888-3113 to find out the location of the nearest CLEAR™ tower(s).
The area around the CLEAR™ modem should also be free of obstructions and sources of radio frequency (RF) interference.
Typical obstructions and sources of radio frequency (RF) interference include:
maximize your CLEAR™ connection
To maximize your CLEAR™ service, attach a router or wireless router. This will allow you to access high-speed internet from any room in your house. However, since both the CLEAR™ modem and the Wi-Fi wireless router are radio tranceivers, please be sure to position the wireless Wi-Fi router at least five (5) feet or more away from the CLEAR™ modem in order to avoid any possible interference. This type of interference may cause a decrease in performance.
small movements, Big Impact
To obtain better signal strength in the modem's current location, try small 1/4" turns. Even small movements can have a significant impact on your signal. Remember, the modem takes a few seconds to register, so after you setup the modem in a new position, pause for 15~20 seconds to see how the new position affects the reception of your modem.
